Visit to the Orphanage!

**UPDATE: For all who have been asking, this orphanage is called "Calvary Care Home". Their Facebook page is here.**

29 Sept 09 (Sunny Saturday)

We went to the orphanage at Bukit Beruang (or was it Bukit Baru? too many bukits in Malacca) overseen by Calvary Life. Main activity was to clean the orphanage home. That was the plan, at least. Not to say that we didn't clean the home, but it didn't feel like the main event. The main event felt like... oh wait. Let's do this in sequence. Hee.

We gathered at Unc Rod's place and left at 11am++.

the newspaper sandwiched in unc rod's gate.

outside the home.

the first face that greeted us was a jolly one.

joshua, the new kid on the block.

puan letchumy, the caretaker

There were ten children in all, and they all had fantastically Christian names. E.g. The four Gospel writers: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John (unc rod: "are you matthew, mark, luke or john?") and Old Testament heroes: Daniel, Isaac, Joshua. Ahaha.

eh. more than ten here.

Sharma fitted in very quickly.

look so cun here right. ahaha.

We were nervous enough as it was. Then we sat in a circle and smiled at each other. *awkward*

We introduced ourselves, age and all, with the relics (Mel, Sharma, Shuen, Sin Yee =P) repeatedly emphasizing that they're 24 but look 16. Then Uncle Rod started the singspiration.

It was terribly unfortunate that they didn't like to sing. Or more accurately, they didn't like singing "children's songs". In the end, we sang a youth song that they suggested. Hm.

Qi did the Ice-breaker, the one where you get a piece of paper with an animal's name and go around making acting like an animal till you find your group members.

They weren't very responsive also, which was understandable, given the circumstances and surroundings. We have gotta work on this.

The boys were shy, I suppose. We had quite a hard time getting some of them to move onto the field for our famous True @ False game.

We had an even harder time persuading the False team to chase the True team. (they had no problem running FROM the True team. ahaha.) But they loosened up in the end. Yay! =D

Then it was time to move on to the main activity. Aha. The Toilet Men (so termed by Uncle Rod, a Toilet Man) went to the toilets, the Sweepers went to sweep, the Rakers went to rake, the Moppers went to mop, and...

...Well, the Photographer went to photograph. =D

Eh, I attempted to be a Sweeper and a Mopper ok. But I got chased out of the house cuz I was leaving footprints everywhere. =(

(public: er, yalah, but at least take a pic of something more worthwhile ler.)

Bah.

Neway.

The boys were really good with cleaning, and I wasn't that surprised anymore when I found their duty roster.

ps2 roster on the right.

Then it was karaoke time!

Erm, without the singing though. ^_^

Uncle Rod and Shaun's teacher from GBS and the home staff (far end) talked about how to improve the discipline of the boys.

...While the young(er) socialized. With Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal playing in the background.

eh, shaun's in every picture.

We may look like we were seriously doing nothing, but we were actually rockin' to the likes of Akon and MJ. Aha.

Socializing ceased for awhile when Sharma arrived with the pizza for lunch.

Again, some of the boys were very good with cleaning up after themselves and the rest, and helping to make sure everyone had an equal share of pizza.

This is Issac below. Woohoo! He's only 15. Shaun was much grieved that day, on account of feeling vertically challenged.

when mel gave them their gifts.

Then we went for lunch ourselves, because we didn't have any in the home. US Pizza it was! =D I didn't take any pictures cuz takut goda our fasting friends who may happen to stumble upon this blog. Ahaha.
When we got back, Will Son (one of the boys) SMS-ed and said,

Thank you for coming we r very happy.

=)

p/s: i'm sorry if i sound awfully detached and factual. it' 1.33 am. i finally managed to upload the pics. whoo!
